【English】September 18, 2026 — Celebrating Older Residents in Araya-Katsuhira
I attended a celebration for older residents at the Katsuhira Community Center as a city council member. Organized by the Araya-Katsuhira District Social Welfare Council, the event featured messages from local elementary and junior high school students, songs and dances by kindergarten children, and traditional bamboo flute music by the Chikuyukai group. It was a warm gathering across generations and a chance to thank those who have supported our community for so many years.
Life in Katsuhira today rests on their years of work, raising families, and helping their neighborhoods. This gathering reminded me to appreciate those efforts and gave me a welcome chance to catch up with my old classmates’ parents. My own parents passed away when I was in my twenties. Talking with people of their generation sometimes makes me imagine what my parents would be like today. I often find myself saying, “You look so well! May I ask how old you are?”
Having places to go and people to talk with matters at every age. I hope Katsuhira remains a place where generations connect in everyday life, and I will keep listening to residents so that older people can live safely and in their own way in the community they call home. Thank you to the organizers, and my warmest wishes for everyone’s health and many fulfilling years ahead.
