秋田市のあきた芸術劇場ミルハスで行われた戦没者追悼式・平和祈念式典に出席しました。市長の挨拶で「先の大戦から79年」という表現が使われましたが、違和感を感じましたので調べてみたところ、「先の」は時間的に先立つことを意味し、「先の日」だと「比較的近い過去の日」を意味します。つまり、79年という月日は、「先の」という表現には当てはまらない長い期間であり、またこの長い年月の中で、私たちが誇りに思うべきは、この平和を維持してきたことだと改めて感じました。
次世代に平和の重要性を伝えるため、市内の小中学生を対象に「平和へのメッセージ」を募集し、最優秀賞の作品が発表されました。しかし、応募総数が26作品にとどまったことから、戦争を知らない世代に向けた平和教育のあり方をさらに工夫していかなければならないと感じました。
戦後79年が経ち、私たち日本人は戦争の悲惨さを深く理解していると思います。しかし、海外に出ると、日本人が自国への認識が相対的に薄いことを強く感じます。これは、戦争の悲惨さを伝える際に、時として当事者を蔑む傾向があり、その結果、自国に誇りを持つ教育が十分ではなくなってしまうことが原因だと思われます。
平和を維持するためには、たゆまぬ努力が必要だと思います。そして、私たち自身が日本人としての誇りを持ち続けることが重要だと思いました。

The War Memorial and Peace Ceremony
I recently attended the War Memorial and Peace Ceremony held at the Akita City Akita Arts Theater Milhas. During the Mayor’s speech, the phrase “79 years since the last war” was used, which made me reflect on the long passage of time. What we should take great pride in as Japanese citizens is the fact that we have maintained peace throughout these many years.
To pass on the importance of peace to future generations, we held a “Message for Peace” essay contest for elementary and junior high school students in the city, and the top two winners presented their thoughts. However, with only 26 submissions, I felt that we have reached a stage where we must rethink how we teach peace to generations that have no direct experience of war.
While I believe that the understanding of the horrors of war is deeply ingrained in the Japanese people after 79 years, when I travel abroad, I strongly feel that Japanese people have a relatively weak sense of national identity. This may be because, in the process of conveying the horrors of war, there is sometimes a tendency to disparage those involved, which has resulted in insufficient education that fosters pride in our country.
Maintaining peace requires constant effort, and it is also crucial that we, as Japanese citizens, continue to hold pride in our identity.

La Ceremonia de Conmemoración y Paz
Recientemente asistí a la Ceremonia de Conmemoración y Paz, que se llevó a cabo en el Teatro de Artes de Akita, Milhas. Durante el discurso del alcalde, se utilizó la frase “79 años desde la última guerra”, lo que me hizo reflexionar sobre el largo tiempo que ha pasado. Lo que debemos sentirnos orgullosos como ciudadanos japoneses es el hecho de haber mantenido la paz durante todos estos años.
Para transmitir la importancia de la paz a las generaciones futuras, organizamos un concurso de ensayos titulado “Mensaje por la Paz” para estudiantes de primaria y secundaria de la ciudad, y los dos mejores ganadores presentaron sus pensamientos. Sin embargo, con solo 26 presentaciones, sentí que hemos llegado a una etapa en la que debemos repensar cómo enseñamos la paz a generaciones que no tienen experiencia directa de la guerra.
Aunque creo que la comprensión de los horrores de la guerra está profundamente arraigada en el pueblo japonés después de 79 años, cuando viajo al extranjero, siento fuertemente que los japoneses tienen un sentido relativamente débil de identidad nacional. Esto puede deberse a que, al transmitir los horrores de la guerra, a veces existe una tendencia a despreciar a los involucrados, lo que ha resultado en una educación insuficiente para fomentar el orgullo en nuestro país.
Mantener la paz requiere un esfuerzo constante, y también es crucial que nosotros, como ciudadanos japoneses, sigamos manteniendo el orgullo en nuestra identidad.
