【English】October 15, 2026 — Japan’s 70 Years in the UN: Working Toward a Peaceful World
I attended a United Nations Association lecture by Nobuyasu Abe, former UN Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs and a fellow graduate of Akita High School. Marking 70 years since Japan joined the UN, he discussed its role in building peace and the challenges it faces. When the permanent members of the Security Council disagree, decisions can stall—especially when those members are involved in conflicts themselves. He also explained the difficulties surrounding a standing UN military force, sanctions, and Security Council reform.
One example of progress was Security Council Resolution 1540, which requires countries to take steps to prevent nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons from reaching non-state groups, including terrorists. His firsthand account offered insight into both disarmament work and coordination within the UN.
The UN’s limits can be disappointing, but we must keep working to make it a place where countries with different views can talk and agree on shared rules. Wishing for peace and thinking carefully about how to achieve it are equally important. Drawing on my experience in international cooperation and my role as a city council member, I will keep learning about world affairs and their connection to our daily lives.
