「地域で頑張っている人って多いけど、でも、その活動って意外と知られていないよな」
そんなことを感じることがあります。
議員をしていると、「普段なにをしているんですか？」と聞かれることがありますが、実は議会以外にも、地域の中でさまざまな役割を担っています。
今回は、その中のいくつかをご紹介したいと思います。
■「名前は堅い」けれど大事な役割 自衛官募集相談員
先日、「自衛官募集相談員」として継続委嘱されました。しかも今回は、秋田市役所の政庁で大々的な公布式が行われ、秋田市長、自衛隊秋田地方協力本部長のお二人から直接、委嘱状をいただきました。
こう聞くと、「かなり本格的に募集活動をしているのでは？」と思われるかもしれません。しかし正直に言えば、自分自身は“積極的な勧誘”をしているタイプではありません。ただ、最近は自衛官の給与や処遇改善が進んでいます。
そのため、「実際どうなの？」「昔より働きやすくなっているの？」と聞かれた際には、できるだけ正しい情報を伝えるようにしています。情報が古いまま止まっていることは意外と多いものです。
特に自衛官は、災害時や有事の際、私たちの生活を支えてくれる存在です。だからこそ、現状を正しく知ることは大切だと思っています。
■朝7時の新屋駅前 “社会を明るくする運動”
保護司になってから、定期的に参加している活動があります。それが、新屋駅前での、朝の挨拶運動、自転車盗難防止のツーロック啓発です。活動日は、4月から10月までの隔月26日。私は「社会を明るくする運動」のベストを着て、ツーロックのチラシ、ポケットティッシュなどを配りながら、通学する学生たちに挨拶をしています。
「ツーロック」とは、自転車の鍵を2つ付けること。たったそれだけですが、防犯効果はかなり高いそうです。活動には、同じ地区の保護司の皆さんだけでなく、さまざまな団体が参加しています。さらに、新屋高校の生徒会の皆さんも毎回協力してくれて、とても賑やかです。
朝の駅前って、不思議なんです。まだ眠そうな顔の学生。急ぎ足の会社員。部活の大きなバッグを抱えた高校生。そんな日常の風景の中で、「おはようございます」と声を掛け合うだけで、少し空気が明るくなる。でも地域って、こういう小さな積み重ねでできているのだと思います。
■ちょっと寂しくなった今年の春
実は、新屋駅前での活動には、個人的な楽しみもありました。通学している中に、新屋高校バドミントン部の知っている子、友人の娘さんなどがいて、顔を見るたびに挨拶しては「お、頑張ってるな」と嬉しくなっていたのです。
でも今年から、その子たちが卒業して通らなくなってしまいました。だから最近は、「なんだか少し寂しいなぁ」と思う瞬間があります（笑）。でも、代わりにまた新しい学生たちが通り始めています。地域活動も同じで、人は入れ替わりながら続いていくものなのでしょう。
■地域の学校教育への関わり
2026年は縁があって、秋田市立御所野学院高等学校で自分の経験を話す授業がありました。国際協力のこと、地域貢献・ボランティアのこと、議員になったことなどを話しました。明るく元気の良い生徒さん達で、ワークショップも交えましたがとても盛り上がって楽しかったです。また私は、毎年、秋田市立秋田商業高等学校で商業実践を行う科目でエコロジカルビジネス国際理解班を受け持っていて、ワークショップを教えたり実践したりして楽しく授業をさせてもらっています。打ち合わせと授業を含めると、週に2回以上秋商に行くこともあり大変ですが、生徒さんたちが成長していく様子を見ることができるとても有意義な時間だと思っています。
■地域との接点を一つ持ってみませんか
地域活動というと、「忙しいし大変そう」「自分にはハードルが高い」そう感じる方も多いと思います。でも実際は、朝に挨拶をする、イベントを少し手伝う、誰かに声を掛ける、そんな小さなことの積み重ねです。地域とのつながりは、特別な才能ではなく、「ちょっと関わってみる勇気」から始まります。もし機会があれば、ぜひ地域の活動を少しだけ覗いてみてください。その一歩が、思っている以上に、自分の暮らしを豊かにしてくれるのだと思います。

Sometimes I think, “There are many people working hard for the community, but surprisingly, not many people know about their activities.” When you work as a city council member, people often ask, “What do you usually do?” In fact, besides city council work, I also have many different roles in the local community. Today, I would like to introduce some of them.
■ An Important Role With a Serious-Sounding Name: Recruitment Support Counselor for the Self-Defense Forces
Recently, I was reappointed as a Recruitment Support Counselor for the Japan Self-Defense Forces. This time, there was even a formal ceremony at Akita City Hall, where I received my appointment letter directly from the Mayor of Akita City and the head of the Akita Provincial Cooperation Office of the Self-Defense Forces. Some people may think, “Wow, you must be doing serious recruiting work.” But honestly, I am not the type who actively encourages people to join. However, salaries and working conditions for Self-Defense Force members have improved in recent years. So when people ask me, “What is it really like now?” or “Is it easier to work there than before?” I try to share correct and updated information. Surprisingly, many people still only know old information. Self-Defense Force members support our lives during disasters and emergencies, so I think it is important to understand the current situation correctly.
■ 7 a.m. in Front of Araya Station — “Movement to Brighten Society”
Since becoming a probation officer, I have regularly joined activities in front of Araya Station, including morning greetings and bicycle theft prevention campaigns. The activity is held every other month on the 26th from April to October. I wear a vest for the “Movement to Brighten Society” campaign and hand out flyers about using two bicycle locks and pocket tissues while greeting students on their way to school. “Two-lock” means using two locks on a bicycle. It sounds simple, but it is said to be very effective in preventing theft. Not only probation officers from the area participate, but also many other organizations. In addition, members of the student council at Araya High School help every time, making the atmosphere lively and cheerful. The atmosphere in front of the station in the morning is interesting. Students still looking sleepy, office workers walking quickly, high school students carrying large sports bags… In those ordinary daily scenes, simply saying “Good morning” somehow makes the atmosphere brighter. I think communities are built through these small daily actions.
■ A Slightly Lonely Feeling This Spring
Actually, I also had a personal reason for enjoying these activities at the station. Among the students commuting to school were players from the Araya High School badminton club whom I knew, as well as daughters of friends. Every time I saw them, I greeted them and happily thought, “They are doing their best.” But this year, those students graduated and no longer pass through the station area. So recently, there are moments when I feel, “It feels a little lonely” (laugh). Still, new students have started coming instead. Community activities are probably the same. People change over time, but the activities continue.
■ Involvement in Local School Education
In 2026, thanks to a special connection, I had the opportunity to give a class at Akita Municipal Goshono Gakuin High School about my experiences. I spoke about international cooperation, community service and volunteering, and becoming a city council member. The students were bright and energetic, and we also did workshops together, which made the class very lively and enjoyable. In addition, every year I teach workshops in the Ecological Business International Understanding Group as part of the practical business program at Akita Municipal Akita Commercial High School, also known as AKISHO. Sometimes, including meetings and classes, I visit AKISHO more than twice a week, which can be busy, but it is a very meaningful experience because I can see the students grow little by little.
■ Why Not Have One Small Connection With Your Community?
When people hear “community activities,” many may think, “I’m too busy,” or “That sounds difficult for me.” But in reality, it is often just small things: saying good morning, helping a little at an event, or talking to someone. Connections with the community do not require special talent. They start with the small courage to get involved just a little. If you ever have the chance, I hope you will take a small look at local community activities. That first step may enrich your life much more than you expect.

260512 Sobre diversas actividades en la comunidad
A veces pienso: “Hay muchas personas que trabajan duro por la comunidad, pero sorprendentemente mucha gente no conoce esas actividades.” Cuando uno trabaja como concejal municipal, a veces le preguntan: “¿Qué hace normalmente?” En realidad, además del trabajo en el concejo municipal, también tengo varios roles dentro de la comunidad local. Hoy me gustaría presentar algunas de esas actividades.
■ Un papel importante con un nombre muy serio: Consejero de apoyo para el reclutamiento de las Fuerzas de Autodefensa
Hace poco fui nuevamente nombrado como Consejero de apoyo para el reclutamiento de las Fuerzas de Autodefensa de Japón. Esta vez incluso hubo una ceremonia oficial en la alcaldía de Akita, donde recibí directamente la carta de nombramiento del alcalde de Akita y del director de la Oficina de Cooperación Provincial de las Fuerzas de Autodefensa en Akita. Algunas personas podrían pensar: “Entonces usted hace campañas de reclutamiento muy activas.” Pero honestamente, yo no soy el tipo de persona que insiste para que otros se unan. Sin embargo, en los últimos años han mejorado los salarios y las condiciones laborales de los miembros de las Fuerzas de Autodefensa. Por eso, cuando alguien me pregunta: “¿Cómo es realmente ahora?” o “¿Es más fácil trabajar allí que antes?”, trato de compartir información correcta y actualizada. Sorprendentemente, mucha gente todavía tiene información antigua. Los miembros de las Fuerzas de Autodefensa apoyan nuestras vidas durante desastres y emergencias, por eso creo que es importante conocer correctamente la situación actual.
■ Las 7 de la mañana frente a la estación de Araya — “Movimiento para iluminar la sociedad”
Desde que me convertí en oficial de libertad condicional, participo regularmente en actividades frente a la estación de Araya, incluyendo campañas de saludo matutino y prevención del robo de bicicletas. La actividad se realiza cada dos meses, el día 26, entre abril y octubre. Uso un chaleco del “Movimiento para iluminar la sociedad” y reparto folletos sobre el uso de dos candados para bicicletas y pañuelos de bolsillo mientras saludo a los estudiantes que van camino a la escuela. “Dos candados” significa usar dos seguros en una bicicleta. Parece algo pequeño, pero dicen que es muy efectivo para prevenir robos. En la actividad participan no solo oficiales de libertad condicional de la zona, sino también varias organizaciones. Además, los miembros del consejo estudiantil de la preparatoria Araya siempre colaboran, lo que hace el ambiente muy animado. El ambiente frente a la estación temprano en la mañana es curioso. Estudiantes todavía con sueño, trabajadores caminando rápido, jóvenes cargando grandes bolsos deportivos… En medio de esas escenas cotidianas, simplemente decir “Buenos días” hace que el ambiente se vuelva un poco más alegre. Creo que las comunidades se construyen con esas pequeñas acciones diarias.
■ Una sensación un poco triste esta primavera
La verdad es que también tenía una razón personal para disfrutar estas actividades frente a la estación. Entre los estudiantes que pasaban había jóvenes del club de bádminton de la preparatoria Araya que yo conocía, además de hijas de amigos. Cada vez que los veía, los saludaba y pensaba felizmente: “Están esforzándose mucho.” Pero este año esos estudiantes se graduaron y ya no pasan por allí. Así que últimamente hay momentos en los que pienso: “Se siente un poco solitario” (risas). Pero, al mismo tiempo, nuevos estudiantes han comenzado a llegar. Creo que las actividades comunitarias son iguales. Las personas cambian con el tiempo, pero las actividades continúan.
■ Participación en la educación local
En 2026, gracias a una conexión especial, tuve la oportunidad de dar una clase en Akita Municipal Goshono Gakuin High School sobre mis experiencias. Hablé sobre cooperación internacional, trabajo comunitario y voluntariado, y sobre cómo me convertí en concejal municipal. Los estudiantes eran muy alegres y llenos de energía, y también realizamos talleres juntos, así que la clase fue muy divertida y animada. Además, cada año enseño talleres en el grupo de Comprensión Internacional del programa de Negocios Ecológicos dentro de las clases prácticas de negocios en Akita Municipal Akita Commercial High School, también conocida como AKISHO. A veces, incluyendo reuniones y clases, voy a AKISHO más de dos veces por semana, lo cual puede ser agotador, pero es una experiencia muy valiosa porque puedo ver cómo los estudiantes crecen poco a poco.
■ ¿Por qué no tener aunque sea una pequeña conexión con la comunidad?
Cuando las personas escuchan “actividades comunitarias”, muchas piensan: “Estoy muy ocupado” o “Eso parece difícil para mí.” Pero en realidad, muchas veces son cosas pequeñas: saludar por la mañana, ayudar un poco en un evento o hablar con alguien. La conexión con la comunidad no requiere un talento especial. Comienza con el pequeño valor de involucrarse un poco. Si tienen la oportunidad, me gustaría que echaran aunque sea un pequeño vistazo a las actividades de su comunidad. Ese primer paso podría enriquecer su vida mucho más de lo que imaginan.
